Atlas Society News - Ayn Rand's Fiction

August TV Highlights with a "Rand connection "

Several films with an "Ayn Rand connection" air this month on cable and satellite television. (All times listed below are Eastern Daylight Time; please check your local listings for the exact time in your area.)

"Cyrano de Bergerac," starring Jose Ferrer, will be broadcast on the "Biography" channel on August 1st at 12:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m., and on August 29th at 12:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. This is the definitive English film version of Edmund Rostand's inspiring play (which was Ayn Rand's favorite), based on the Brian Hooker's brilliant translation from the French.

Terrence Rattigan was another of Rand's favorite playwrights. In 1999 writer David Mamet did a fine film adaptation of one of Rattigan's best plays, "The Winslow Boy." It airs on the HBO channels (East and West) several times on August 4th, 8th, and 17th. Check your local TV listings for exact times.

Ayn Rand expressed admiration for Margaret Mitchell's great American novel, Gone With the Wind. The immortal 1939 film version of this tale of the Civil War South, starring Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh, will be broadcast on the Turner Classic Movies (TCM) network on Saturday, August 4th at 8:00 p.m. EDT, and again on Sunday August 5th at 2:00 p.m. EDT. If you've never seen it, don't miss it.

The TAS Web site is specifically—and strictly—devoted to the aesthetics of Ayn Rand. Normally we would not promote any work or artist lacking some clear "Rand connection." But the only "Rand connection" I could find regarding my next film recommendation is that Ayn Rand had met one of its co-stars, actor Dean Jagger.

Nevertheless, I'll hang my enthusiastic recommendation of "Cash McCall" on that slender thread.

"Cash McCall" has proved to be a great favorite among Ayn Rand fans, and with good reason: it's a wonderfully romantic portrait of an American businessman very much in the "Rand style." James Garner is magnificent as McCall, a corporate raider who is depicted sympathetically (!) Natalie Woods is enchanting as the young woman torn between her love for McCall, and for her father...whose firm is one of McCall's takeover targets.

"Cash McCall" airs on the "Love Stories" (LOVE) cable network on August 7th, 11th, 17th, 22nd and 27th. Again, check your local cable or satellite TV broadcast schedule for exact times.
