May TV Highlights
Several films and documentaries of interest to Ayn Rand readers will appear on cable television during the month of May.
Turner Classic Movies (TCM) broadcasts "The Fountainhead" on May 4th at 6 a.m. EDT, and again on May 7th at 5 p.m. EDT. Ayn Rand wrote the screenplay for the 1949 film, which stars Gary Cooper and Patricia Neal. (TAS members should check out Dr. Stephen Cox's review of "The Fountainhead" on this Web site.)
Two contrasting film interpretations of Edmond Rostand's immortal play, "Cyrano de Bergerac," will air this month. You can see the great 1950 version starring Jose Ferrer as the noble Cyrano (and based on the exquisite Brian Hooker translation from the original French). It will appear on the Biography (BIO) channel on May 9th at 12 p.m. EDT and at 6 p.m. EDT. On May 15th at 1 p.m. EDT, the Bravo network will broadcast the 1990 French version (with English subtitles), featuring Gerard Depardieu in the title role. (Check our Links page for online background information about the play.)
Finally, Frank Lloyd Wright admirers can get an armchair tour of his finest work when the documentary, "The Homes of Frank Lloyd Wright," is shown on Home & Garden TV (HGTV) on May 6th at 9 p.m. EDT, and on May 7th at 12 a.m. EDT. (Again, our Links page provides Web resources about Wright and his work.)
